School Handbook

2018-2019 Rio Vista School Handbook

Welcome to Rio Vista Elementary.  We look forward to ensuring every child is part of a strong educational program. Thank you for taking the time to review the school information in this handbook.  Please read this handbook carefully and keep it for reference during the school year.

Attendance Information

Improving student attendance is a top priority in LAUSD.  Rio Vista joins our District in setting goals for positive student attendance.  All Kindergarten to Grade 5 students need to line up no later than 7:55 a.m.  Dismissal is at 2:22 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  Early dismissal is every Tuesday with dismissal at 1:22 p.m.  Please make being on time a priority. Students who arrive after 8:00 a.m. are late!  Progressive consequences for tardy students will begin the second week of school. Please note that if your child is late or absent (excused or unexcused), you will receive an automated call from LAUSD.  Three tardies (for more than 30 minutes) or three absences without a note are considered truant.  LAUSD will automatically generate written truancy notices after three unexcused absences.

The Law

  • All students between the ages of 6 and 18 must attend school daily.  Parents or guardians are responsible for sending their children to school. (E.C. 48200)
  • A student who is absent three full days without a valid excuse, or on three occasions is tardy for more than thirty minutes, or any combination thereof, is truant. (E.C. 48260)
  • Truancy can lead to severe consequences, including fine and criminal prosecutions.

“Excused” Absences:

  • Illness (ex: fever)/ Exclusion by School Nurse
  • Medical/dental appointment
  • Funeral services (1 day in-state, 3 days out-of-state)
  • Court appearances in which the student is required to attend
  • Religious holidays (must be pre-approved by the Principal)

READMITTANCE AFTER ABSENCE:  The state law requires us to record all absences carefully and to determine the reason for each absence.  Please send a written excuse with your child after each absence stating the reason for the absence.  Your child should report directly to his/her classroom, not to the office.  A medical note is required for absences in excess of 5 days due to an illness.  If your child is absent because of a communicable disease, a note should be presented from a doctor.

Pupils wearing braces, casts, using crutches, or having stitches shall be admitted to school providing their condition does not endanger their health or the health and safety of others.  In these cases, the pupil must present a signed written statement from a physician allowing attendance in school.  Pupils must remain off the playground until a written release signed by the physician is brought to the school.   See “Parent-Student Handbook” for more information.

TARDIES – You are late, when you arrive after 8!

Attendance Awards are periodically given to students with perfect attendance.  Our school policy is that if your child arrives to school after the school bell at 8:00 a.m., this is considered a tardy.  In determining Perfect Attendance Awards, three tardies count as an absence.
